Professor R.C. (Ruth Christa) Tobler is professor of European Law at the Europa Institute of Basel University, Switzerland (where she teaches in the framework of the multidisciplinary Advanced Master’s Programme on Advanced European Studies) and of Leiden University, the Netherlands (where she is the director of the Advanced Studies Programme in European and International Business Law). Her special research interest concerns equality and discrimination as a legal concepts, both in the context of economic and of social law. She studied law at the Universities of Zurich, Switzerland, and Leiden, the Netherlands where she specialised in European Union law. Her Ph.D. thesis was about Swiss trademark law and her habilitation thesis about indirect discrimination in EC law and in Swiss Federal Law.

Christa Tobler spent research periods in Kyoto, Japan (at the Kyoto Comparative Law Institute), and in Florence, Italy (at the European University Institute). She also worked as a clerk at Swiss district court and for a short while as an employee of a law firm. 
She is currently a member of the editorial board of the Swiss Review of International and European Law. She is also expert member in the 'Network of Legal Experts in the anti-discrimination field' of the European Commission in Brussels.
